Economist in Kenya

Meet Julius Chokerah, the economist at the Resident Coordinator’s Office in Kenya. Julius supports the Resident Coordinator and the UN country team’s engagement with the national and county governments in designing development strategies at both levels of government, based on their shared vision.

Julius has coordinated resident and non-resident UN agencies in collaboration with key stakeholders (government, private sector, academia, civil society, parliament, and media) to design a National Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) acceleration strategy for implementation through 2030, under the leadership of national authorities. He was instrumental in coordinating the inputs of key stakeholders around three priority thematic areas to accelerate SDGs at national and county level. Julius also facilitated the Local Voluntary Review (VLR) by coordinating discussions with selected donors. The process enabled these counties to increase resource allocation towards key SDGs sectors, and generated interest from other countries for such an initiative.

As a key penholder of the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (2022-2026), he coordinated engagement with UN agencies, and ensured alignment with national and county priorities. Julius also coordinates a network of UN agencies, International Financial Institutions, academia, private sector and think tanks on various analyses including the Government Post COVID-19 pandemic recovery strategy and national budgets analyses. Regular briefs he produces on socio-economic analysis and updates helped the UN country team prepare against major economic shocks such as drought.
