Head of Resident Coordinator's Office in the Multi-Country Office in Fiji

Meet Jan Nemecek, the Head of the Multi-Country Office in Fiji, covering Fiji, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.  He supports the Resident Coordinator to ensure coherent and tailored support to countries in advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.  Jan’s role has been particularly important, under the ongoing UN development system reform, to align support to the needs of every country covered by the Multi-Country Office, by bringing required expertise from the entire UN system wherever it sits to effectively support the Governments of Small Islands Developing States. Jan also oversees the Country Coordinators in the countries outside of Fiji serviced by the Multi-Country Office to ensure a much stronger linkage across these countries on a wide range of development support the UN team offers.     

Jan co-steered the development of the multi-country UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework for the Pacific (2023-2027), designed jointly by the countries covered by the three Multi-Country Offices – based in Fiji, Samoa and the Federated States of Micronesia.  For the first time ever, five Country Implementation Plans he and his team developed respond to the concrete needs and priorities of the Governments of each Pacific Island Country under MCO Fiji, captured through a strategic prioritization process in each country, in close consultations with civil society and development partners. 

Jan has also been supporting the UN country team to work with the Government of Fiji on a new green and resource efficient UN House in Suva, which will host 19 UN agencies, for a total of approximately 800 staff, currently spread out over 12 locations in Suva.  This will entail major savings in transport, IT, security, rent, electricity and other costs.
