Leading multisectoral efforts for a thriving society in Honduras

Under the leadership of the Resident Coordinator, the UN country team in Honduras is responding to multidimensional priorities through a joint approach that brings together the expertise of all UN agencies, funds and programmes, along with those of all relevant stakeholders in the country.

Peaceful and inclusive elections in the country in 2021 were made possible by coordinated assistance provide by the UN. Working together with civil society, political parties, electoral management bodies and representatives of international cooperation, a conflict prevention strategy was developed and electoral assistance rolled-out in the country, including for national registration ID and women's political participation.

Several UN entities including the International Migration Organization (IOM), the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) have also been providing comprehensive support to boost the Government’ response to secure shelter, food, hygiene and COVID-19 prevention for migrants and refugees. In addition, the Resident Coordinator’s advocacy and diplomatic efforts have helped prevent the closure of a key shelter in the southern border region supporting an estimated 350 migrants and refugees a day; and an amnesty on the fine for irregular entry into national territory was lifted in August 2022, benefiting over 118, 000 people on the move that endured pain, violence and long journeys.
