Economist in Angola

Andrea Antonelli is an Economist at the Resident Coordinator Office in Angola, where along with the UN country team has been supporting the government’s efforts for the socio-economic transformation of the oil-led economy towards sustainable and inclusive diversification. 

He has been leading inter-agency task forces, providing timely analyses to the UN country team, while facilitating regular discussions on policy implications and solutions for SDGs achievement. With similar goals he is also co-chairing a network of economists on economic diversification, including International Financial Institutions. Thanks to his contribution, the latest Common Country Analysis (2022) integrates gender inequality across sectors with special focus on its impact on the socio-economic transformation of Angola.  

Similarly, he provided crucial assistance to the Government of Angola in the finalization of its first Voluntary National Review in 2021. He is currently engaged in the new UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (2023-2028) design process, helping ensure its alignment with the new National Development Plan and with the SDGs through policy simulation tools like the integrated SDG model. This model is now owned by the Government of Angola, and is meant to strengthen its development planning to accelerate the country progress towards SDGs. 

He has been supporting the Government’s active contribution to global initiatives, such as the Transforming Education Summit and Food Systems Summit, and in the process of graduation from its Least Developed Country status, promoting accelerated investments in human development and social protection. He has also co-organized a side event on the “Impact of the Crisis in Ukraine on Development Financing in Africa” together with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa and the Government of Angola.
