News: The Organization of Ibero-American States and the UN commit to continue promoting the 2030 Agenda
The Organization of Ibero-American States (OEI in Spanish) and the UN, represented by the Development Coordination Office for Latin America and the Caribbean (UN/DCO LAC), signed a joint collaboration agreement.
In a virtual event from Madrid and Panama City the Organization of Ibero-American States for Education, Science and Culture (OEI) and the United Nations Development Coordination Office for Latin America and the Caribbean (UN/DCO LAC) signed a collaboration agreement in which both organizations have agreed to join forces for the development of activities that promote the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda in the region.
The agreement has been signed by Mariano Jabonero, Secretary-General of the OEI, and Roberto Valent, Regional Director of the Development Coordination Office for Latin America and the Caribbean, in the presence of Andrés Delich, Deputy Secretary General of the OEI.
This agreement reinforces the joint work that the OEI has been developing with the United Nations in recent years. “We have a direct relationship with the UN System. We have recently been in New York at the last General Assembly, and we have managed to have a close and fruitful working relationship with organizations such as UNESCO and the ILO, for example, with whom we work to benefit the development of the region," said Mariano Jabonero during the signing.
The signed document includes the launch of joint initiatives such as publications, seminars and awareness raising campaigns in areas of shared interest, including education, culture, science, technology, energy transition, digital transition, human rights, democracy and gender equality, as well as joint participation in the design and development of activities that promote circular, trilateral, South-South and other modalities of cooperation.
Specifically, the agreement will also promote communication and dialogue at the political and technical level between the Resident Coordinators of the UN in Latin America & the Caribbean and their offices with the directors and teams of the national offices of the OEI.
“These alliances help us achieve the Sustainable Development Goals that our Member States have set, at a time when our region needs it more than ever,” Valent highlighted during the signing. “Accelerating the 2030 Agenda requires an important alliance and multiplying cooperation, including at the regional level,” he pointed out.
This collaboration will also focus on the development of sustainable development initiatives that are aligned with the Cooperation Frameworks for Sustainable Development of the United Nations country teams, and with the document New Agenda for Ibero-American Cooperation-European Union: Strategic priorities for cooperation in Ibero-America, prepared by the OEI, which sets out the challenges that the region faces in terms of education, innovation, culture and ecological transition.
